CHINA
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao highlighted the issue of water safety in the urban areas. In the next three years, China will prioritize water safety in 205 cities and 350 countries.
The State Council called for redoubled efforts to protect water sources and renovate outdated water facilities in the cities.
China's 11th five-year plan sets out to accelerate the use of desalinated seawater. In fact, there will be a restriction on using fresh water as the main source of water in coastal areas, be it for industry or domestic purposes. The plan forecasts that desalinated water would account for 16% to 24% of water in coastal areas that lack water supplies. About 800,000 to 1 million cubic metres of seawater is expected to be desalinated per day by 2010.
THAILAND
The Ministry of Industry approved the budget of nearly Bt10 billion for the Royal Irrigation Department to manage water supply in the eastern region. Half of the budget will be used to construct Khlong Luang reservoir, and the rest will go towards building a water pipeline from Chao Phya River. Deputy Industry Minister Piyabutr Cholvijarn said the two projects were expected to complete in 2010.
The market size for the wastewater treatment equipment was about US$164 mil in 2006, a growth rate of 5% from 2005. Wastewater treatment in Thailand is divided into two areas, the government and private sectors. The government sector will provide a budget of about USD436 million a year for a new wastewater treatment projects in Bangkok and other municipal areas. The market size for private sector is about USD 654 million a year.
Growth is driven by economic performance and booming direct foreign investment, especially in export-oriented industries. The demand for wastewater treatment is expected to increase by at least 10% per year.
The Government plan to allocate 48 billion Baht on a comprehensive water management system covering the four river basins in the eastern region in a bid to combat serious water shortages.
VIETNAM
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has issued a decision to add more funds to the 'Programme for Clean Water and Rural Environmental Hygiene' in 2007, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ( MARD ). Under the decision, the Government has agreed to add VND175 billion ( from non-refundable sources granted by the governments of Denmark, Australia and the Netherlands ) to this year's budget to boost implementation of the programme. This total will be fed to nine provinces; Tra Vinh, An Giang, Dak Nong, Dak Lak, Ninh Thuan, Phu Yen, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, and Lao Cai.
The Asian Development Bank ( ADB ) has pledged $53.2 million in preferential loans to provide clean drinking water for over 150,000 people living in the middle of the country. The funds will be poured into projects to upgrade water supply systems and sanitation infrastructure in eight small and medium towns in the provinces of Binh Thuan, Dak Nong, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan and Phu Yen.
The Vietnam Water Supply and Sewage Association ( VWSA ) estimates that the total investment for water supply projects will be more than USD $2 billion for the next ten years. The market in Vietnam offers good prospects for the sale of water resources equipment and services. There are key opportunities in providing engineering design adn construction services as well as equipment, particularly drinking water treatment systems.
SINGAPORE
With the development of major international water projects such as NEWater, the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System
( DTSS ), desalination and rainfall storage like the Marina Barrage.
Some of these companies are now partnering the PUB including GE Water will invest US$87 million over the next 10 years in the research center with specific focus on water treatment and system integration, as well Black & Veatch will also invest US$60 million over the next 5 years.
INDONESIA
The Government target to increase the number of residents with access to clean water from the current 20% or 42 million to 60% of the population or 150 million by year 2015.
The Water Bill will provide impetus to revive over 300 regional water companies across the country, and to provide clean water to domestic and industrial users.
The government is offering three water supply projects that will serve as models for private-public partnership ( PPP ) projects in the water sector. The three projects are the Bandung water-supply scheme, which is worth Rp 300 billion, the Tangerang water-supply scheme, worth Rp 300 billion, both of which are located in West Java, and the Dumai water-supply project in Riau province, which is worth Rp 400 billion.
INDIA
1,797 pipe water supply projects were proposed for 2007-08 out which 1,153 projects have been completed and 28 more projects are under construction.
The Government has taken up a massive job of providing safe drinking water to all habitations with priority to areas having water scarcity. Of the 9,200 spot sources proposed to be installed in the current financial year, 2,964 have been completed by July.
It is also proposed to construct overhead reservoir for all the piped water supply projects to ensure uninterrupted supply and improved services to rural people. With the availability of Rs 294 cr for accelerated rural water supply projects, the Government has proposed to cover 6,381 habitations in the current fiscal year and by July-end 2,431 habibations have been covered.
PHILIPPINES
Water supply and distribution, water usage monitoring, sanitation and sewerage form the major prtion of the US$700 million Philippine market for environmental products, technologies and services. The market is expected grow 5-8 percent per year over the next three years, due in large part to government and private-sector programs and projects.
Pilipinas Bulk Water Corp. ( PBWC ) is set to invest about P70 million in missionary projects this year to supply bulk water in selected areas throughout the country.
