| :: malaysia setting the pace for water & wastewater management |
|
Malaysia, which has the distinction of being the first country in the region to privatise its water and sewerage sectors has continued on its privatisation programme that provides tremendous opportunites for international participation and cooperation. A new Water Commission has been formed to provide the impetus to promote the growth of this sector. In addition, it will also set water quality standards for water companies to deliver improved services to consumers.
At the same time, Malaysia has drawn up regulations and guidelines of international standards on the discharge of industrial wastewater. The Ministry of Environment has also beefed up its monitoring activities and imposed heavy fines on offenders. These measures together with the many environmentally conscious manufacturers have helped to ensure that water supplies will be sustainable.
Therefore, it is not surprising that Malaysia will remain as one of the most active market for water and wastewater technology and services in Asia. |
