Water management is becoming increasingly comprehensive and complicated due large population concentrations, increasing water consumption and pollution, climate change, escalating land-use conflicts and commercial activities and industries concentrated around cities and towns. Population growth, urbanisation, industrialisation and the expansion of irrigated agriculture are imposing rapidly growing demands and pressures on the water resources, while contributing to the rising water pollution.

The unusually long rainy season in 2011 took its toll on many countries across Asia, including Thailand, laos and Cambodia, and has resulted in the worst flooding crisis in Thailand for at least 50 years. Governments are allocating increasing budgets to this major issue to improve quality of life, ensure sustainability and minimise loss of property and lives. Flooding remains a major problem in cities in the region. Every year, damage runs into hundreds of millions dollars and paralyses business activities. In addition, as cities grow, vast tracts of land are cleared for housing and commercial use. As a result, many areas are experiencing landslides that are taking lives and destroying property. Much work is also needed to improve water management in river basins to ensure a sustainable water supply.
